New Exhibition: Torgau. Residence of Renaissance and Reformation

In the 15th and 16th centuries Hartenfels,  the impressive Renaissance castle, was the residence favoured by the Electors of Saxony whose political power protected Luther and significantly supported the spread of his ideas of reform. Schloss Hartenfels is UNESCO World Heritage candidate 2017.
The Special Exhibition, which is realized through the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections) shows the interrelations between politics and the Reformation and present the significance of Torgau as residential seat of the Electors of Saxony in the 16th and early 17th centuries.

New Exhibition: The work of Johann Walter in the restored priests’ house of Georg Spalatin

Built in 1493, the house in number 8 Kathareninstraße is one of the oldest remaining houses of the city of Torgau. As far as can be determined, the house is the only remaining clerical house in Saxony still mostly in its original

Magister Georg Spalatin (1484 – 1545), mediator and tireless supporter of the Reformation, resided in Torgau from 1508 in this property. In 1523, the Prince Elector of Saxony gifted Spalatin the house as thanks for worked performed by Spalatin for the Prince Elector. The house was later sold again by Spalatin for 200 Guilders (gold pennies), after Spalatin became the pastor and superintendent of Altenburg. Georg Spalatin was also a close friend of Martin Luther and was Luther‘s intermediary to the Prince Elector, making Spalatin one of the most important supporters of Luther’s Reformation. In celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the Spalatin House has been further restored and made open to the public. The house now hosts an exhibition exploring the role of music during the Reformation.

Torgau´s Fairytale Christmas Market, 1st to 20th December, 2017

Remote from the big cities, the Torgau Christmas market is a very special tip. It only lasts for two weeks and over the years more and more people come to see the big tree in front of the town hall and the lovely fairytale scenes there. Regional products and seasonal articles are offered in nicely decorated cabins, and children are waiting for Santa Claus, who always comes with his little helpers at the afternoons and even has time enough to pose for a photo. You should not miss the annual Christmas exhibition in our museum, where this year historic Christmas tree decorations will be shown.
